If you are following Doe Doe’s story, you know she wanted to be a momma very badly. If you haven’t heard of Doe Doe yet, You can read the story here to fill you in about what has been happening with her on our homestead!
The original clutch of eggs from a friend I had Doe Doe brooding and hatching had some no-shows in it. Only one little only child hatched. We gave it a day and still the others never pipped their shell. We candled to find only one other egg in the bunch had any development but sadly it was not viable.
My husband called and asked permission (as any decent husband would) to bring home a few day old chicks from Tractor Supply. “Sure!” I said…I was thinking to myself that this is the perfect time to put some same aged chicks with the only child, but it was a gamble – would Doe Doe accept them?
I was NOT, however, thinking that I should confirm the number of chicks my husband was bringing home. Surely he would use good judgement, right? He brought this little momma bantam hen ELEVEN new babies. She was so excited when we let them out of the box, an they immediately went to her.
This was day one Doe Doe with all of them tucked up under her. ALL TWELVE! She is quite simply, in momma heaven! So far all chicks have taken to her and she is doing an amazing job!
What a sweet way to enjoy Spring – maybe in a few more days I can let her venture from the feed room with them; hopefully I get a good shot of them on their first adventure!
What’s happening at your home this Spring? Any news you want to share with us? We’d love to hear from you!
