::Magic Custard Pie: My Mom’s Recipe::
This is such a special pie to me and one of the simplest do make! It literally takes less then 5 minutes and is always perfect! When I was growing up it was not uncommon for us to have company from early morning till late at night. When Mom knew it was going to be a busy day she would whip this up while waiting for a pot of coffee to finish. 🙂 Her guests would notice when they smelled it baking; and would say “What is that amazing smell?” Mom would just smile and say just a little something that will go with coffee 🙂 and it sure did. Company would be amazed she even had time to make a pie!  I would always see her beam with pride as she served her guests; she was so multi-talented and they DID notice.
We lost my Mom after a long illness in 2010 but her memory will live on forever in our hearts and with her recipes for generations to come.
Do you have recipes that just make you feel so good when you bake them? For me this is it! I love the sweet smell from the oven. The hardest part is letting it cool 🙂 My mom would stick it in the freezer to cool it quicker. I just put mine in the fridge 🙂
Often, at night after the house is quiet, I find myself sitting down with a cup of coffee on the back deck just enjoying the peacefulness and savoring this pie – thinking back to when I was a little girl and my Mom would create magic in the kitchen.
Ingredients
- 1/4 c margarine
- 4 eggs
- 3/4 c white sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup purpose flour

- Pour into a buttered 9 in. Pie Plate
- Bake until set 350* for 45 minutes.
- Cool and Serve.

It sure does make clean up easy. I have to smile because our generation uses our food processors and kitchenaids. My mom’s generation loved their kitchen tools too and the blender was a big one then and so was her Tupperware Jello Molds haha. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane. 🙂
With words like magic and custard, I’ve got to try this recipe! Looks divine!

Hi Chelley. I can’t wait to hear how you like it and how quick it is to make. So good for you too. Good Luck in your pregnancy 🙂
My mother had a similar recipe. Unfortunately, we lost all of my mother’s recipes after she died. (It’s a long story.) I’ll have to try this one, I bet it’s just as wonderful as hers was.
I hope you do try it Pam. Our mom’s were from the same generation and I bet you will find they are so similar. Comfort food when we miss them so much.
Thanks for sharing this treasured recipe with the rest of the world! What a wonderful thing! 🙂

I love puddings and custards and flans and brulees! How close in texture is this to a flan? Looks and sounds delicious!

It’s not as creamy as normal custard. This is nice because it makes it’s own crust. I will be posting an old fashioned egg custard that is super creamy with a flan feel 🙂 This is perfect for when your in a hurry 🙂
I’ve never tried custard pie but it sounds delicious. Thanks for sharing such great instructions that look very easy to follow.

I was wondering can you add coconut and how much?
Hi Jackie,
You can I’d do 1/2 to 3/4. I will make another one just to test it out and let you know. I know I have but cannot remember exactly 🙂
Hi, this looks incredible. Can I use a cake pan, would there be any changes to the recipe or time? Also, I live in a high altitude area (7400′) do you know if I should make any changes for that? Thanks~
Hi Lisa,
You can use a cake pan it might be a little thin. But still just delicious 🙂
