Sourdough Bread Recipe

 Sourdough Bread Recipe

This recipe is so incredible – and I’m excited to share it with you!

Let’s face it – the cost of bread is getting ridiculous. We were on strict rations around here!  But not anymore. This sourdough bread recipe made from a sourdough starter I keep fed everyday has really been a joy in our home!  It’s incredibly easy and fail-proof!

Toast for everyone!!!

Sourdough Bread Recipe

Sourdough Bread Recipe

Prep Time: 4 hours, 15 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 4 hours, 40 minutes

Yield: 2 loaves

Sourdough Bread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of sourdough starter
  • 4 cups unbleached all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in counter top mixer
  2. Mix at medium speed for 5 minutes or knead by hand on floured counter between 10-15 min
  3. Check to make sure dough is not developing too moist, add a bit of flour accordingly
  4. Generously butter 2 bread pans
  5. Transfer dough to bread pans
  6. Dust generously with corn meal or oats
  7. Cover loosely with wax paper
  8. Allow to rise 4-6 hours in cooler months or as little as 3 hours in warm months
  9. Bake 25 min at 390 degrees (remove wax paper and take bread pans out while oven preheats!)
  10. Turn out immediately onto cooling rack

I made your recipe for the sourdough bread but it didn’t rise very much. Is this the norm? Or did I do something wrong?

Hi Ter, it’s hard to say without more info: Did you make your own sourdough starter and if so, how many days had it developed? Is your home kept very cool? Mine usually barely doubles in size – but it takes about 4 hours to do so. Let me know and I can help you figure it out! It is a very dense bread so it won’t rise up magnificently – pretty much stays flat on top too. Nothing at all like fluffy white loaves in a store.
